Liam was sprawled on the worn leather sofa, a half-eaten bag of chips resting on his stomach. The television murmured in the background, a nature documentary showing the migration of monarch butterflies. He had just finished a particularly grueling week at work, and the thought of unwinding at home brought a deep sigh of contentment.

His sister, Sarah, had called earlier, a slightly breathless confession about embracing Hinduism. Liam had listened patiently, offering the occasional “Mmhmm” or “That’s cool.” He stretched his arms above his head, feeling the satisfying pop of his joints.

He picked up the remote, intending to rewind the documentary. The sheer normalcy of it all – the mundane task, the familiar setting, the comforting weight of the sofa beneath him – made him feel like he was floating on a cloud. He’d deal with the family discussion later, after he had a nap.
